SECU – Maryland’s largest credit union – has raised more than $37,500 for the United Way of Central Maryland through employee pledges and special fundraising events that were held during the annual fall giving campaign.

SECU also made a $6,000 corporate gift to the United Way, which will go toward programs supporting financial literacy.

“The efforts of SECU and our employees will go a long way toward supporting the United Way and its work to help families obtain access to safe and affordable housing, employment opportunities, good healthcare, affordable food, and quality education programs,” says Roderic Flowers, Vice President of Human Resources Development at SECU.

Throughout the United Way campaign period, SECU employees also volunteered their time to support a number of worthy causes. These “Days of Action” included volunteer work at the United Way of Central Maryland Project Homeless Connect, the Community Assistance Network, and My Sister’s Place Women’s Shelter, among others.

“As a member-owned credit union, SECU has a long tradition of community outreach,” says Flowers. “We encourage our employees to volunteer in our communities and give them time during the regular business day each month to volunteer. Our Days of Action during the United Way campaign gave our employees the opportunity to help make a difference by doing something. It is a great feeling when you can help those in need.”

In addition to the United Way campaign, SECU has regular activities to support the communities of Maryland, including food and school supply drives. SECU also provides free financial education presentations and financial assistance via programs like Kids Helping Kids, The Love Blanket, and A Wider Circle. SECU recently launched the Goals for Kids program with the Baltimore Blast, which supports the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital.

“Although SECU’s primary community outreach goal is financial education, we also support social causes that will help people in need in the communities we serve,” notes SECU President and CEO Rod Staatz. “I am proud of the way our employees came together during our United Way campaign to support others. If we help people in these ways, we can improve Maryland communities as a whole.”
