State Sen. Bill Stanley said Wednesday he hopes that a high-tech, digital-based shipbuilding education program can be established at the New College Institute (NCI) by next fall.
But “we will not be building ships at NCI,” Executive Director Leanna Blevins emphasized. That will continue to be done on the coast.
Stanley, a Franklin County Republican who is chairman of NCI’s board, said during a meeting of the board on Tuesday that he has been talking with Newport News Shipbuilding about bringing a training program to the institute and the entities are close to entering a memorandum of understanding.
