Atlanta Intellectual Property/Patent Attorney Kean DeCarlo Joins Womble Bond Dickinson

12/5/17

Experienced IP and patent lawyer Kean DeCarlo is the newest addition to the Womble Bond Dickinson team. DeCarlo brings his 20+ years of experience in the mechanical, software, database solution and medical technology sectors to the firm’s Atlanta office.

DeCarlo focuses his practice on international and domestic patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, as well as IP strategy, licensing and portfolio management. His clients include start-ups and early-growth companies as well as established international corporations. He has been repeatedly included in the IAM Patent 1000 as one of the world’s leading patent practitioners.

“Kean understands the business interests of clients, and he is well-respected in the patent field,” said Jim Vaughan, a leader of Womble Bond Dickinson’s IP, Technology and Data Service Team. “He is a tremendous addition to our 100-plus lawyer team.”

Michael Sullivan, Managing Partner of the firm’s Atlanta office, said, “Kean has an outstanding reputation in the profession. He has held leadership roles in the State Bar of Georgia’s Patent, Trade Secret, and Technology Law Sections and his 2016 and 2017 publications include analysis of the United States Supreme Court’s recent Inter Partes Review cases as well as corporate risk management policy suggestions in the wake of the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016. We are excited to have Kean join the growing Atlanta office of our new firm.”

DeCarlo said, “Womble Bond Dickinson is known for its strong, deep IP bench. My clients will benefit from this move, especially now that the firm’s capabilities extend to the UK and Europe.”

In addition to his legal practice, DeCarlo serves an adjunct professor of Intellectual Property Law and IP Licensing Law at both Georgia State University College of Law and Mercer University College of Law.

Before law school, DeCarlo served in Operation Desert Storm as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot.

His decision to join Womble Bond Dickinson is the latest example of the firm’s successful efforts to attract top talent. In October, for example, an established life sciences IP/patent group led by Danielle Herritt, Deborah Vernon, Ph.D., and Cristin Cowles, Ph.D., joined the firm’s Boston office.
