Dr. Chhabra inherits a legacy of medical care. His interest in medicine seems natural, with a father who is a pediatrician, and a brother who is an orthopedic hand specialist. Mostly, his experience as an athlete in high school and college motivated him to consider orthopedic sports medicine. As a former student-athlete, Dr. Chhabra could personally relate to the athletes as a healthcare provider. He was able to communicate with the coaches and athletes on a level and environment that they could understand. Dr. Chhabra earned his medical degree from the esteemed University of Virginia in 1998. Committed to effective patient care, Dr. Chhabra pursued rigorous academic preparation for his advanced medical career. He completed an internship in General Surgery and residency in Orthopedic Surgery from University of Virginia Health System. Additionally, he graduated with a Master of Science in Surgical Science in 2004. Dr. Chhabra also completed a fellowship of Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Armed with this remarkable scholastic training, Dr. Chhabra worked in the private sector of healthcare. He then transitioned to the Mayo Clinic campus in Arizona in 2014 to develop his teaching and academic passions. In this position, Dr. Chhabra occupies administrative, educational, researcher, and clinical roles. He works in the office and clinic, carries out clinical trial research, and performs surgeries with a primary focus on complex knee cases. This professional success inspired Dr. Chhabra to consider a teaching position where he can share his substantial clinical experience. He presently teaches medical students at the Mayo Clinic Arizona and is actively developing the Mayo Clinic’s new Orthopedic Residency.
An active contributor to medical research, Dr. Chhabra has performed many clinical trials and has co-authored more than 35 academic pieces of work published in recognized medical journals such as The American Journal of Sports Medicine and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is Principal Investigator on four active Mayo studies and Co-Investigator of one active study. His fierce dedication and exceptional patient compassion have led to shining professional accomplishments from his peers. Dr. Chhabra also boasts professional memberships and associations throughout his academic and practicing clinical career. Dr. Chhabra’s academic prowess was recognized with entrance into Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He also maintains memberships in the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Arizona State Orthopedic Society, the American Medical Society, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Chhabra has research interests in multiple ligament knee injuries, osteotomies, MPFL reconstruction and patellar realignment, and concussions. These broad interests guide his research activities today. As an authority in his field, Dr. Chhabra is an Editorial Board Member and Reviewer at the American Journal of Orthopedics.
Dr. Chhabra is principal or contributing author of dozens of peer-reviewed articles to date. He wrote one book called Pathology Recall 1st Edition in 2002 and authored book chapters in 13 books on Orthopedics. He has edited several books, among several other miscellaneous editorial pieces cross-media. Dr. Chhabra’s extensive writing covers diverse orthopedic medicine topics like surgical technique guides to diagnostic evaluations of surgical approaches.
He has many forthcoming co-authored research articles accepted for publication within the next year as well. Within the next few years Dr. Chhabra hopes to continue practicing in the 3 Shield Practices at Mayo Clinic which are patient care, research and education. Dr. Chhabra looks forward to training the next generation of orthopedic medical students.
