A Georgia-based bakery plans to close its operation in Winston-Salem and lay off 169 employees, according to a filing with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Flowers Bakery plans to end its operations at 315 Cassell Street in Winston-Salem on Oct. 8.

“The major reasons for this business decision are outdated equipment and insufficient volume to justify keeping the bakery open,” said Flowers Bakery of Winston-Salem President Evan Griffin in a letter to the state agency.

The affected workers include 57 production helpers, 40 production operators, 11 mixer operators, and 10 maintenance engineers.

Flowers, which is based in Thomasville, Georgia, had purchased the plant, which produced snack cakes, in 2006.

The company produces bread and cake products using brand names such as Nature’s Own, Wonder, Tastykake, and Dave’s Killer Bread.

Last week, the company reported that its second quarter sales decreased 0.9 percent to $926.6 million. Net income decreased 12.5 percent to $44.7 million.

The notice was filed pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which must be filed 60 days in advance of a plant closing that affects more than 50 employees in a 30-day period or a mass layoff of at least 500 employees or between 50 to 499 employees if they make up at least one-third of the employer’s workforce.
