Next Cyber Civil Clinic at Wicomico Public Library to take place on June 14

Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS), the largest provider of pro bono civil legal services to low-income Marylanders, today announced the continuation of its Cyber Civil Clinics held at the Wicomico Public Library thanks to a new grant awarded by The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. The $5,000 grant will help fund MVLS’ Cyber Civil Clinics that provide free legal services to low-income Marylanders in Wicomico County. The next Cyber Civil Clinic at the Wicomico Public Library’s downtown Salisbury branch is scheduled for June 14 from 2-4 p.m.

“Trigger moments, like the loss of a job, a death or divorce, can leave Marylander’s lives in a downward spiral, especially if they lack the ability to hire an attorney to guide them through the legal process,” said Bonnie Sullivan, executive director, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS). “Grants from local foundations, like The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, give the working poor access to free civil legal services they need to protect their livelihoods, their homes and their families. MVLS is honored to continue hosting free Cyber Civil Clinics for residents in Wicomico County and looks forward to expanding the program throughout Maryland.”

Cyber Civil Clinics – How they workVolunteer attorneys stationed at MVLS’ Baltimore office will be connected through a live video portal to clients logged in at the Wicomico County Library. Library staff will assist clients in using the technology.

MVLS’ volunteer attorneys will provide civil legal advice for divorce and child custody proceedings, landlord-tenant disputes, bankruptcy and other consumer legal issues. In addition, attorneys will be available to prepare petitions for criminal record expungements, which will be emailed to clients to print and sign at the library. Library staff will mail the petitions for MVLS’ attorneys to file. All court filing fees will be waived because clients will be using MVLS’ services.
