Structural Engineering Firm Takes Home Awards For Work on Two Marquee Manhattan Residential Projects

DeSimone Consulting Engineers, a leading structural engineering firm with offices worldwide, has won two Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACECNY) for the structural design of two high-rise Manhattan developments:100 East 53rd Street and Madison Square Park Tower.

DeSimone received the “Structural Systems Platinum Award” for the firm’s collaboration with Foster + Partners on 100 East 53rd St in Midtown, Manhattan. The 330,000 sf residential project rises 715feet with a slenderness ratio of 16:1,and required a 450-ton tuned mass damper to mitigate the building’s movement and acceleration during high-wind events. The structure also achieved a LEED Silver rating and demonstrates that luxury apartments with state-of-the-art residences can be accomplished with a focus on sustainability and the reduction of ecological impact.

DeSimone also received the “Structural Systems Silver Award” for its work on Madison Square Park Tower (previously named 45 East 22nd Street) designed by Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) and Hill West. Located in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, the 777-foot ultra-luxury condominium building features a structural system comprised of cast-in-place concrete slabs and columns with lateral load resisting shear wall cores, and a slenderness ratio of 13:1. Located at the top of the structure is a 1.2 million pound mass tuned damper which helps keep residents comfortable during high winds. The 260,000 sf project cantilevers over the neighboring 6-story building and features floor plates that expandas the building grows taller to provide additional square feet in the most premium residences. This design strategy presented a greater return on investment for the client and exceptional homes for future occupants.

“DeSimone is honored to be recognized by the ACECNY for our work on these remarkable projects,” said DeSimone President / CEO Stephen DeSimone. “Both towers presented their own set ofunique challenges, allowing our team to develop creative design and engineering solutions. We are proud to work with New York City’s developers as they enhance the architectural landscape.”

DeSimone has completed numerous award-winning projects in New York City, including P.S. 62, NYC’s first net-zero energy school, the iconic Standard Hotel and New School University Center, as well as super-tall developments 220 Central Park South, 50 West, and 111 Murray.
