Transwestern Makes Wishes Come True For Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic

11/3/16

Transwestern’s Mid-Atlantic region recently supported the mission of Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic by participating in the organization’s Adopt-A-Wish® program in which they were paired with local wish kid, Ruth, a 14-year-old from Falls Church, Virginia, with a hematologic disorder. Ruth’s wish was to visit Australia, where she toured the Sydney Opera House, relaxed on the beach and met a koala.

“Words cannot express how much fun I had and how happy it made me,” said Ruth. “The trip exceeded my expectations.”

“We are extremely proud to support Make-A-Wish, an organization that’s making a tremendously positive impact in the lives of children and families both here in the Mid-Atlantic and around the nation,” said Phil McCarthy, executive managing director and Mid-Atlantic market leader. “We believe these wishes can make a world of difference in helping kids fight against an illness, and we certainly hope that’s the case for Ruth.”

According to the results of Make-A-Wish’s 2011 Wish Impact Study that surveyed wish parents, health professionals and volunteers, children who had a wish granted were able to make greater progress against their illness.

Transwestern team members coordinated several fundraisers, including casual dress days, where team members could wear jeans to the office in exchange for a donation; a partnership with a food truck at a Transwestern-managed property, where a portion of the food truck’s profits were donated; and a tie competition between two Management Services team members, Assistant Vice President Colin Diefenbach and Vice President Jonathan Grover, who each wore a different neck tie every day until their inventory of ties was depleted.

Transwestern announced a national partnership with Make-A-Wish in February. As part of that partnership, Transwestern’s 34 offices around the U.S. have held a variety of fundraisers to benefit the organization in its efforts to grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Nationally, Transwestern has raised more than $142,000 for the charity.

ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH MID-ATLANTIC

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic serves children who reside in central and southern Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Founded in 1983, the organization has granted more than 8,800 wishes in the Mid-Atlantic region since its inception. This year alone, 840 local children are expected to be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. However, for every wish granted, at least two more local children are waiting. The community has the opportunity to make an impact today by helping Make-A-Wish to reach hundreds of kids whose wishes would go otherwise go unanswered this year.
